We're only getting shitty songs and episodes which tackle monumental questions (RD's Wonderbolt status, Fluttershy's unseen family, Rarity's drams of making it big,...) that have been here since the day we knew their motivations/seen their families for the first time in such massively underwhelming ways it is hard to describe.
I'm sorry, but that is anything but "as good as it ever was."
We are also getting some great episodes, but they are in he minority right now and the same could be said about songs, one of the longest standing staples of the series.

I prefer to rank the episodes separately, but I'd say S5 and S2 are the best of the bunch.
Don't get me wrong, S6 also has some great episodes (the opener sans the baby, Trixie ep sans Twilights antics, HWT sans the fact it was a cliche premise) but 12 episodes in with 5 episodes I couldn't enjoy at all is hardly decent in my book.

Why is the show so bad at adding good side characters?
There are few exceptions, but for the most part, you are thanking every deity known to you this or that pony is just a one-off you'll never need to see or hear ever again.
Contrast that with characters like Trixie and such, the handling of these used to be better.

Thing is that in my opinion, even S3, which is the worst season is still pretty damn good.
It's amazing how the show managed to keep it's quality so high after 5 seasons.
I mean look at the current one. The two worst episodes are one that's considered just boring and nothing else and one that is pretty damn divisive regarding it's quality. Then there's two episodes that are considered a 9 or 10/10 by most people. And the rest range from good to great.

The biggest problem is the time it takes to introduce and develop a new character.
It's near impossible to fit a dense story and a new character to develop in 20mins.
For some characters it works because the character in and of itself is the story.
But it's pretty rare.
And new characters seen on more than one episode are way better as time goes by.
Starlight, and Trixie are some examples of that.
I personally think the last Trixie episode was the best in character development for her.
And I'm even wishing for her to become a recurring character. (like a new team with Starlight, the same way the CMC episodes are done)

Since the show is so strong with the musical numbers that they always pull in the most viewers.

I don't know if i'm right, but I think we are heading on a more action oriented spin-off série with the mane 6.
And the main serie may shift its focus to an extended cast. (maybe more alternates groups, in the veins of the CMC.)
At least that's what I would do, as the main 6 are very close to exhausting all that can be done in slice of life episodes.
