ITT: People contribute music stuffs and we combine everyone's efforts into music. Everyone is welcome to participate. You can also discuss show/fandom music, ask for/give critique of yours or other's music, share tips and tricks, etc.

Previous Thread: https://desustorage.org/mlp/thread/24983287

Album Info:

>What is this?
This is a project that aims to actually create an album of music from /mlp/. It'll be a compilation of sorts, potentially containing everything from originals, remixes, collaborations, etc. The past efforts never came to fruition, so we're trying once again. If you create music, sing, rap, create art, write lyrics, have ideas, or just want to participate somehow, jump right in, and email [email protected] who you are, what you do, contact info (May include preferred email, YouTube, SoundCloud, ect), and anything else you want to say.

>What kind of music is the album going to contain?
Virtually anything is acceptable. This means complete originals, remixes, collaborations, soundscapes, etc.
Simply create a folder for your work within the proper folder within the Dropbox (more info in the Google Doc). For example, music goes in the music folder. Your folder will be used for sharing ideas, posting demos, etc. For your finished product, you may submit a mastered and/or unmastered WAV or AIFF, and simply drop it into your folder, indicating it's the final one.

>What about artwork?
Yes, we need artists as well for the album cover. Artwork will be submitted to the Dropbox in the same way as the music. Decisions on how which piece will be chosen will be arranged soon. Artwork for individual songs is possible for those that want it.

>I HAVE MOAR QUESTIONS
Then continue reading this → (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qfmH6zOQ6U0TgOWiT8mkihmbKnjzLoYmHsawwl26W6A/edit#) document. If you still have questions, email [email protected], or just ask in the thread.

Let's make some music.

Wooohoooo really good thing. Bonus points for heartbeats. Totally nice.
Let's name it like "Lost Rainbow" or something. And we need to make a cover of "Rosetta stoned" after this track. Or make something equally awesome, but more dark.

If this thread would produce a good quality Tool cover, we'd be soooo based, guys. I'm totally up for this challenge.

I should really finish that tab. Shouldn't be long though, I got most of the lyrics, and I think I'll reduce it to 2 verses. I want to make sure it's not too much longer than 3 minutes.

>boring and pretensious
Sounds like an apt description for minimalism to me.
That said, it's the only genre of experimental music I like.

>>25221928
It's been almost a year since I said I was getting off the ride to concentrate on my studies.
That never happened.

It really depends on where they want to head off to: trying to go professional seems like a daft move; carrying on like they are and just removing the pony side of things would be (in my opinion) the best way to go but it'll likely leave them with just the chunk of their crowd who like the music more than the ponies; going to FNAF makes me shout "WHY?!".

>>25223031
>I don't like people who only do one type of thing
As in stick to a single genre? Mingle in a single scene?

>If you try to do something different maybe the public will not like it that much
I'm guessing you're talking about the audience you've amassed by that point. Joe Bloggs who just lives around the corner and will never know what a "brony" is may have a different opinion.

Well, I stuck a kazoo up my nose today to see whether that'd change something timbre-wise.
The conclusion is that you can hear yourself humming at the same time you play the kazoo but can't tell the difference from a few inches away (i.e: recording with a microphone) so whatever change there is is negligible to others.
I've tried a few things on harmonica like hum through it (which I've seen Brendan Power do on stage for one of his songs) or rolling R's through it trying to get a tremolo effect(which I've just looked up: someone calls it a throat vibrato... which I don't think it is).

As for experimental music, I'm referring to stuff like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KWUcMGrN2k
(I'm having difficulty finding any YouTube clips of chaotic orchestral noise that I usually associate with experimental music. I only know of Gyorgy Kurtag's stuff because I went to a concert where they played a few of his movements: they were interesting little ideas but nothing you should make entire movements out of... like he did...)
Stuff I do like is usually:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PZaen25MnU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4WlNj1TTqA
And I listened to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5lgAUHVFC4 on repeat whilst studying at one in the morning.

Make my creative process methodical and mechanical. It sounds counter-intuitive, but the more you can automate the process, the more your free up your brain to do higher level stuff, and the more creative you can be. It's why I spent a fuckton of time methodically studying and experimenting with harmony and counterpoint.

There's a spooky song (https://www.dropbox.com/s/3synq11omvsj67e/SpookyRainbowThingUpdate.mp3?dl=0), but I'm just mixing at this point.

There's also a song for Lauren Faust underway. Still a WIP demo at the moment: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qds8rmoj5mr2ixm/For%20Mom%20Update_Bridge.mp3?dl=0

The other stuff I'm working on still needs contributions from others who said they'd do parts, so I'm just waiting there.

For the Boom De Yada piece you want more voices in the chorus part I'm assuming?

Also the song "For Mom" is that the set drum beat the song will have or would it be alright if I recorded something else to that track?

Are those the only main projects that need things done or are there others I can help with?

I'm no bassist and playing bass was harder than I imagined it to be so I broke the bassline into two pieces and tried to line them up into one.

You can pretty much consider the structure done and completed. Now it just needs to be played and recorded for real... unless you think I should keep working on it.
I think I could have done better with the cello. Let me know what you think.

I'm not really font of the NCT in measure 7. Perhaps sustain it for half the measure then drop down to G? I'd just watch for low interval tones in the tenor/bass voices. Like minor 2nds and 3rds. Measures 55 and 61 have minor 2nds too which sound kind of weird. Overall I like the composition side especially 97 - 113. Can't wait to hear the non-midi version.

Thanks for the advice. I'm surprised you don't like the NCT. I'll see what I can do, maybe slide it down as you suggested? I'll do the same for measure 61. As for 55... well.
Regarding the voice, it's midi. Midi voices are shit by definition, I'm not too worried about it. I'm positive the live version will sound a lot better, and I mostly put it here to show the time marks.
Thanks for the opinion

It's actually for cello but, considering we've been thin on the ground on cellos since Cellofag scarpered... and ElectroCelloFag seems oddly absent...
Anyway, either I transpose the tabs for bass (in which you'll need to drop your E string to D) or you retune your bass to CGDA (can your G string be tuned up to A?) and I don't need to do anything to the tabs... apart from...

>>25265107
It just hit me that your cello's an octave too high. It starts from C2 and not C3.
I had this problem when I tried composing and Cellofag had great difficulty playing it. Didn't realise why he was having problems until a few months down the line.

Are you waiting on me for anything? I'd've forgotten, if that's the case.

Some femanons have left contact details in the Google Doc (contacting them, I'm guessing, is what you mean by "cold-call requests" so you've already considered that).

Then, after a while of her enjoying herself, the guy at the controls got bored and set the sub-wooofer on max (against the woman's wishes).
Don't quite know what happened to her but she couldn't form intelligible words during or afterwards. She just screamed, moaned and grunted a whole lot.

Anyway, weren't we making music or something?
>>
>>25311119
It's not about the recording itself. It's an electro-acoustic, it's fairly straight-forward.
No, my skill is at fault here. I'm trying to play on a 12 strings, and it does sound nice, the issue is that I can't keep playing for 5 minutes straight, and my hand is not big enough. That guitar is bigger than any guitar I've had before, and that 3-7 stretch is just a pain.
I just need to practice more and get used to it. I've only had this guitar for two weeks after all.

You may have a ground loop. If I'm right, the good news is that nothing is broken. Ground is the 0V reference point for electronics. However, if you have more than one ground point, and at least one is not quite 0V (or the exact same voltage) or there's a loop, electronics will basically race between them. This creates a buzz. To solve it, watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YM1iwC6vhg

>>25324551
I'd advise you use some sort of noise-removal as I don't have any knowledge on what Sound Guy's talking about.
Basically, it's a little effect thing on Audacity (and elsewhere) with which you record the noise itself and then run the program to remove the noise from your recordings (with varying degrees of success).
I used to have two channels recording (left had what I wanted, right had nothing but noise) and used that until I got better equipment.
Or maybe you just messabout with various connections until the noise stops. Could be a loose wire.

>Have no clue what a signal chain is
I don't know either but I'm going to guess it's the stuff you use from guitar to laptop.

Interesting....
Is this an original composition ? is it yours ?
>>
>>25345324
Yes, it's mine, and no, I'm not Anoridan
>>

Very nice. I must say, good job.
>>
>>25345351
What are you using to record ? and what piano is it ? sounds pretty neat.
>>
>>25345439
This was a recording done in class with my professors Zune recorder. I can't remember what the piano is. I think it's just an upright Yamaha

But it's a "real piano", with strings and pedals, right? (no digital), it sounds like one, but who knows...

Anyways, back to the topic: i have to say it sound pretty nice, theme it's simple-hearted, sure you put feeling when you play the notes, but i still feel that you were being just a little technical when playing in some parts. where your nervous ?
It starts slow, melancholic, delicated, and then at 1:55 the theme starts growing up, and rises more, and then it goes back slow and melancholic, that transition is simply beautiful...
Sorry for asking too many questions
Anyways, good job indeed

Yes, it was a real piano. I'm not a great pianist. It was actually meant for my piano teacher to perform who is very proficient. And I don't mind questions

This triggers the baguettefag
Especially since you did spell it right in the mp3 title, it's like you're doing it on purpose

But yeah nice thing. I like the composition.
Proj 2? Do you have more?
>>
>>25354515
Yes, but the other one is fucking god awful because I literally wrote it in two days, and I hadn't practiced it with the other two performers
>>
>>25347837
but it was you playing, right?
