It's incredible how some of you NEETs put all that effort into tearing apart the writing but just can't put 2 and 2 together. First of all, the premise of the episode is outstanding, and the moral can be applied to so many real-world situations. The examples themselves were also quite good, but the flaws in the episode comes from the final execution.
The leaking valve coupling in the spa represents the initial demonstration on how a small issue, ignored because everyone is busy and it seems largely irrelevant, can then lead into a lot of extra work for everyone indirectly.
The reason why AJ was not able to reevaluate her pig feeding procedure is the same reason why many businesses don't optimize their own policies and procedures. Nobody will take the time to sit down and figure out which steps are necessary or superfluous. The existing process works, "don't fix what isn't broken."

The problems is how ridiculous and over the top applejacks redundancy issue was.
Comparing it to realistic redundancy (is that the right englandnesian word?) habits doesn't work, like at all, because of how over the top it is. Bungee jumping and chicken dancing as part of feeding your pigs isn't a realistic habit to form at all.

the stupid steps in AJ ritual can be explained thusly:
1: it's a cartoon show for little girls, they were trying to make it engaging
2: while they would not make sense for a real farmer, a greater degree of shenanigans are to be expected in ponyland
One flaw in particular with the writing is that AJ was shown feeding the pigs in about 30 seconds, while the list was supposed to have taken an hour to complete. A more realistic task to have been listed and assigned to Twilight (just from the ones given in the episode) would have been irrigation. However, that would have provided the necessary opportunity for AJ to explain why each step was "necessary."
