Admittedly speaking, all of the mecha from Ryosuke Takahashi's shows, sans the Panzers [Kikou Kai (Armored World)/Panzer World Galient], though Combat Armors [Taiyou no Kiba (Fang of the Sun) Dougram] and Super-Powered Tracers [Aoi Ryuusei (Blue Comet) SPT Layzner] have to have their heights reduced to be feasible.

I took a look at the subs. Funimation's "Theatrical" subs, compared to the "Official" BD subs, which were supposedly the cause of the delay. It's clear that Funimation completely fucked up the metaphysical stuff. And they portrayed Shinji as being way more attached to Rei than Khara intended.
A bad movie gets a bad release. No surprises there.

Pretty much guaranteed. With the exception of the Raven units, every other unit whose upgrade was possible to undo like in the case of combiners, backpacks or mobile armor modules had their add on/combinations disabled in one way or another for a good number of missions
What happened with this show? When I use to watch lots of anime it was hailed as an excellent show and tons of people liked it. It never hit mainstream popularity like Evangelion did but Escaflowne was pretty big with anime fans in the early 2000s. Escaflowne was that one anime that everyone liked. It wasn't a perfect show or anything but people loved it.
Now I go on review sites like myanimelist and people just rip it apart. What happened? Backlash from early popularity? I know the animation style with the big noses can throw off people but I'm shocked at the...

How many episodes? 25 or 50? Either way, this sounds like a total disaster. I really don't think you can stretch the story farther without really fucking it up. It was an OVA for a reason.
