What exactly has Thunderbolt done to deserve it's acclaim? It's characters are one-dimensional. (even the casts from IBO and Seed Destiny had more depth to them) It's "dark and gritty" in the most cliche and banal ways possible. It adds noting new to the One Year War or in general.
Are anime fan so shallow as to be won over just by pretty animation and a jazz score?

Don't be silly. The jazz score was superfluous.
Look it gave us a good MC who loved piloting his Gundam and a Zaku Pilot who didn't just suck and die, that, the godly 2D animation and the mecha porn was enough to keep me entertained, I don't consider it high art, but it's a fun watch.

Ignoring all the human drama involved in this story, what do you think about the usage of non-military robotics to kill people? Should we tele-operate our police and military forces? Completely automate them? Does the thought of a gun-toting robot dog that can run at 40mph, climb stairs, and jump onto first story rooftops / through windows keep you up at night?
So what sort of robot was it?

Post mechs and mobiles suits with crippling design flaws. One's acknowledged in universe too not just ones that should logically occur due to the design. Bonus points if without the flaw the mech is otherwise very effective.
I'm leading with the Zudah simply because I know it's going to be posted relatively early anyway. Even though I'm starting with gundam this doesn't need to stay gundam, off the top of my head I can think of about a dozen deeply flawed (in universe) battletech designs.
the valvrave units seem to be somewhat limited by heat generation even if its subverted by the 666 thing and the heatsinks in the second season

There was an in-universe reason why it was designed that way, but I always thought it was hilarious that the Standing Turtle couldn't turn its head and instead had those little hatches that the pilots had to open if they wanted to look to either side.
