Since there is no official, dedicated 'philosophy' board, this is as good a place as any to ask.

Was civilization a mistake?
>>
Consciousness was a mistake. Everything else follows from that.

This board is dedicated to the discussion of history and the other humanities such as philosophy, religion, law, classical artwork, archeology, anthropology, ancient languages, etc. Please use /lit/ for discussions of literature. Threads should be about specific topics, and the creation of "general" threads is discouraged.

For the purpose of determining what is history, please do not start threads about events taking place less than 25 years ago. Historical discussions should be focused on past events, and not their contemporary consequences. Discussion of modern politics, current events, popular culture, or other non-historical topics should be posted elsewhere. General discussions about international culture should go on /int/.

/his/ is not /pol/, and Global Rule #3 is in effect. Do not try to treat this board as /pol/ with dates. Blatant racism and trolling will not be tolerated, and a high level of discourse is expected. History can be examined from many different conflicting viewpoints; please treat other posters with respect and address the content of their post instead of attacking their character.

When discussing history, please reference credible source material, and provide as much supporting information as possible in your posts.

there's no way to measure that. modern hunter gatherers report higher levels of happiness than "civilized" people.

But modern hunter gatheres arent ancient hunter gatherers.

And is subjective happiness what qualifies a success?

It's impossible to answer.

And the ideal life changes depending on the race and culture.

As opposed to what? Living like a caveman? Are you daft?
>>

Who cares?

Better question is what we're going to do about it now.

was literally just about to post that.

Do you know what man did before civilization? We ate each other.

There were trade offs to our transition from anarcho-communal societies to what we refer to now as "civilization" and whether you wish to refer to it as "progress" is irrelevant. The fact is, our technology and understanding of invention has advanced our species tremendously. The problem is that we're still hung up on degressive, religious zealotry and dominion that leads the common mob to believe there will be another chance when all the resources are scavenged.

Democratic government under the influence of uneducated mob --> stupid societies; Now, venture capitalists and opportunists exploit this ignorance to make incredible gains in private ownership that are facilitated and protected by our laws (across multi-national boundaries).

There's just simply no utopia in future sight, so we idealize nature with nostalgic visions that lead us to forget about the barbaric and harsh conditions.

>Was civilization a mistake?

Civilization is the principle of domestication extended to other humans, so is inextricably linked to the advance of agriculture and animal husbandry, the mistake starts there.

If you're an optimist, and a romantic, then you hope for these things to serve as a historical lesson to future generations who will make ever greater efforts towards new "enlightenment" or "transcendence" projects that redeem our history and prevent us from inevitably running out of things and people to exploit.

We don't have much else to hope for, if we're still in the hoping mood.
