Are there any books that actually reflect modern life? Preferably written recently.

in what way? in a literal one where people talk about current problems and use all kinds of gadgets and online services, etc.? or something that describes the weird atmosphere we live in?

It's Taipei.
Taipei is the capital of Taiwan, just because it's Asian doesn't mean you have to try and make the word all gooky

i wouldn't know, i'm not too much into current lit. but given our time of rapid technological adances, any book that relies on these kind of things will look outdated pretty soon. but if it's more about this feeling of aimlessness and lack of direction, you might as well read mid 19th century literature. it's been said that we live in a time where art of the 20th century has come to an end but the new one isn't there yet.
