I ask because some of these are really short.

At times I've seen $2000 for a 1000 word short story.

Are people on here submitting to these places?

Most have entrance fees but beyond that no reason not to. It's also good if you can see who's judging the contest and see if you think your work has a similar aesthetic to theirs imo.
