But seriously, screenwriting is fucken hard and I suck at it.

I've written hacky plays, but screenwriting is something else entirely...you have to dumb yourself down quite a lot while still retaining poignancy.

Nobody ever made it by typing up a screenplay they thought was good and mailing it to Warner Bros crossing their fingers somebody would be outrageously bored enough to read it and think "by golly, this is something else!". That's fantasy land shit.

Realizing that literary tricks don't work in a screenplay is not dumbing yourself down, it's learning how to write a screenplay.

It's heavy on the platitudes at times, but overall it's a pretty good introduction to screenwriting.
