What are your thoughts on short story lengths? I'm currently editing a piece of mine which, when all done and dusted, will be around 10,000 words. I think this is fine and it's as long as it needs to be but I'm wondering what others think as 10,000 seems to be the upper limit for a lot of journals and such.

P.S it's a Wallacian, symphonic, urban-tragedy, but if you can believe it is also actually rather good.

10,000 words will probably hit about 20 pages or so. That's a good size for a short story.
The upper cap for a short story should be "I can read this in one sitting." That's ultimately why you're writing a short story and not a novella or a novel. 20 pages is well within that.
The lower bound is a bit tricky. If you can make a meaningful story in a few pages, you have quite the talent for terseness.
If I didn't know the author beforehand I'd say it should be 6-7 pages minimum.

I find I work in 2500, 5000, and 10,000 categories.

I can't believe it.
i find i can make most into around 7000 words. if given a bit more 8500 is probably enough wiggle work to make anything move, i do have a 10000 story though and only found like 4 places to submit it to though. i'm thinking of rewriting it into a screenplay
