Now you edit every day, hour per day for a year, and you end up with a 270 page book. And then you suck a different literary agent's dick every day, an hour per day for a year and you maybe get published.

Takes a lot longer than that to learn rocket science buddy boy

Is this true that publishing is so difficult only in america?

The societal difference between the america and the rest of the west is quite big. Basically, american society raises people to think that profit is the be all and end all, that capitalism is the most noble and best system in the universe etc.

So unless you're a creative who actually generates the book/film/music or whatever, then you're in it for the money. Because literary agents have so much swing over what gets published they have leverage over writers. They use this to extract favours from writers such as free writing gigs, proof reading, and a bunch of other things as well, even shit like dinners and drinks. The agents don't see this is bad necessarily, they simply see it as capitalism (and hence good moral behaviour) in action.

If the agents decide to publish you then it's because they see some potential in making a large profit relative to investment. However chances are that they'll also want to change A LOT of it to make it appeal to more people and sell more. They don't care about the artistic value of your work, they care about the money they can make.

Hence, getting your work published, in a form that you are happy with, takes a lot of effort in america compared to other countries which aren't so entrenched in capitalist ideology.
