It was a booker prize finalist.
I've heard it is pretty heartbreaking.
It's a gay minstrel show with tepid prose. I fucking hate the state of literature in 2016. You can write absolute garbage but as long as you're a female or minority writer writing about homosexuals/minorities, you will have all the world's accolades heaped upon you. Just look at that hack Junot Diaz. Writes absolute shit but he's a brown man writing about "muh immigrant experience" so he gets a Pulitzer and MacArthur Fellowship.

haven't read A Little Life, but I'm pretty creeped out about a straight woman writing hundreds of graphic pages of a little boy getting abused and then self injuring for a mostly straight women audience and then <spoilers> killing himself </spoilers>
her first book also had to do with child abuse and she proudly (?) did zero research on actual cases, maybe the writing is good but it seems like spruced up misery lit

Didnt read the book, it was bad but not for these reasons.
The homosexuality was a side show, the book is an unrelenting and unrealistic portrayal of human suffering that was obviously designed to appeal to vapid moms just like American Psycho was designed to appeal to edgy assholes. It was a one trick pony that becomes laughable after 600 pages, and there are still 150 left to go.

It was about 300 pages too long, needed major editing. Contained lots of misery porn and scores of uninteresting and unrealistic characters being pretentious, privileged, and successful, yet still somehow miserable.
