Fate stay night is a better-written fantasy epic tale than LoTR.

The essential nature of heroic ideals, and an in-depth exploration on what would motivate someone to follow that path. The idea of selfish actions for selfless reasons. A dilemma between logic and emotion (Rin's conflict). The idea of facades and how we hide ourselves within society. Consequentialism and regret; nihilism (Saber's conflict). Existence and individuality (Shirou's "rebirth" following his death in the fire). The meaning of choice. Contrasting of several different philosophies (Pragmatism, Altruism, Idealism, Utilitarianism, etc). Perceptions of people (very overt with the way Shirou perceives his father vs everyone else). Cultural expectations of good and evil (Shirou/Kirei). Consent and fate (Medea and EMIYA). Societal values and morality.

Prove me wrong.

Nasu can cram as many edgy ideas into his visual "novel," it doesn't change the fact it's poorly written by a literary standard.
Not that Tolkien is any better.

Fae/stay night is truly the pinnacle saga that all literature, not just VNs strive to be. Not only is the story telling prodigious, the pacing and character development is top notch. The level of depth that Nasu created is on another level. The exquisite and subtle use of narration at only times of importance delivers an amazing story telling experience. Of the various themes present in this work, his theme of ethics and value theory incorporated with various interactions between the characters appeal to logos, ethos and pathos, and this amalgamation of techniques once again prove his acuity and status as our generation's most talented writer. His profound messages regarding man's quest for heroism and the juxtaposition of epistemology and ontology with introspection as a guilt-ridden sociopathic protagonist delivers an amazing tale of tragedy and optimism. The fact that he delves into the more psychological aspects of human nature, morality, structuralism, existentialism, meta cognition and phenomenology show tthat he truly understands philosophy, proving that this epic is the most intelligent tale of our decade. Nasu demonstrates his ken of the human condition as a hole through Fate/stay night, his magnum opus.

Yume Miru Kisuri is the pinnacle of VNs, and the fact that the Nasuverse is dark and edgy doesn't make it deep. KnK is Nasu's best anyway.

I've always been conflicted in whether to consider Fate to be a work of genius or a complicated and conflicting work that somehow became more than the sum of its parts.

What really amazes me about this anime is how many varied reasons people like it. Reading different reviews or interpretations almost feels like that author saw a completely different show. There is little unity in what makes Fate amazing, and that is why its hard for me to consider it a work of genius. I would argue that such a title would require a much clearer point from the creator.

Honestly, Fate is an extremely broken anime. While the characters struggle to move forward in their world and come up short, so too does this occur to the anime in a literal sense. Everything shatters in its drive, and we catch glimpses of hidden truths within the fragmented reflections. Sometimes it is the littlest detail that catches us and makes us love this anime. All this works because everything that broke did not want to. When everything is stripped away, only honesty remains. The genuine human effort the occurs inspires regardless of its outcome, and that's why I believe Fate still resonates.

Anon, I wrote a fucking essay detailing the parallels between F/SN and Albert Camus' Myth of Sisyphus. The "read some REAL literature" shit is only played by people who don't actually read much.

Sure F/SN tries to incorporate some of that stuff as a general comment on heroic myths. Don't think it does a whole lot for it and it's more enjoyable as an average wizards and warriors thing. Guess LotR was too even though it was better at incorporating European myths, but I'm not going to bat for pretentious Nasufags
