The Iliad is at its heart a painting of the warrior culture of Dark Age Greece. In the time of the oral tradition Homer is coming from, things were bad. Bronze Age civilisation had collapsed and roving bands of pirates were sailing the eastern Mediterranean sacking, slaving, burning cities. For your town to survive, it had to be ruled by big, testosterone-fuelled angry brutes who could fight and wouldn't be bossed around by anyone. The rulers of the cities of the Aegean only rule because they are good killing machines: this is made explicit in Sarpedon's speech to Glaucus in Book XII.
What I truly love about the Iliad is how Homer takes this warrior ethic and critically examines it in every aspect. The beauty and the suffering and the pity of war.
