A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

It's not depressing per se, but surely sad and I cried more than reading any other book.

So Long, See You Tomorrow.
I'd say Oblomov, but that is more personal.

I didn't find Catcher in the Rye very emotional when I first read it but when I thought about it the other day I started crying because I realized how lonely and desperate Holden was.

And thus you get why it's the ultimate adolescent book

I don't know how Salinger did it, but it's perfect

Every time I think about it I notice something new.

Recently I remembered how Mr. Antolini was respected because he as the one to pick up the kid who fell from a window, and was therefore doing something similar to what Holden wants to do by catching children falling from the cliffs.

I still think there's a lot I missed, especially with the eskimos (why they're mentioned in Phoebe's diary). I love the fact it takes place over two days, proves a novel doesn't have to be about exaggerated characters running around the world slipping over banana peels.

Indeed. Thats why it caused that suicide wave in Europe.

A Journey To The End Of The Night was pretty depressing desu lad.

I had to read The Cobra Event during the summer before AP Bio and I got really depressed as a result of reading it (even though that's not the intent of the book).

The reason for this was mainly personal and the novel isn't that great in form. It's a good read if you're willing to overlook the issues.

I don't really see how people found Journey that depressing. Sure, bad stuff happens, but Journey is much more of an angry novel than a melancholic one.

Besides, Celine is way too funny to be depressed by for long.
