Dunno where this subvocalization meme started, but if you are trying to skim through books just use your finger and start using it as a guide to build up speed.

You lose the subtler aspects of literature. If you are reading a text book or a self-help one, fine, but if you are doing this with a novel or a poem, you are basically skimming over a lot of the art in it.
