That actually sounds really interesting
>>
I'll ask in this thread because my question doesn't necessarily need an own thread.

How did you guys start writing? I mean, did you start by poetry or short stories? Maybe essays? Straight to a novel or something?
>>
>>8155002
I don't like it when people mention in terms of pages because that has a lot of factors into it. Like I'm writing a "short story" that's about 10 pages long but it's at an 8 point font with 1.0 line spacing so it's actually a bit (13000 words)
>>
>>8155083

I've thought of turning it into a generations type thing, Something along the lines of 100 Years of Solitude or Jojo.
>>
>>8155102
Yeah, I just sort of wrote little short stories when a particularly interesting idea popped into my head. I also wrote a lot of screenplays, but it was mostly little pieces of flash fiction when I started.

I'm currently writing quite a few things. Multiple short stories, a few screenplays, and this one idea that I can't decide on a medium for. The only problem is that recently I've been afflicted with a nasty writer's block that's made me depressed. I've started so many things, but as soon as I do I'm overwhelmed by just how shitty my writing is, and it forces me to stop because it overwhelms me with anxiety. Nothing I write is good enough, and even though I desperately want to write because I genuinely think my ideas are good, I lack any confidence in my actual abilities. It's so frustrating because I'll obsess over every word and come to realize just how terrible it all is and I put it off.

Anyway, sorry for the blog post. Nobody should care about this anyway and I didn't mean to sound like some whiny cunt.

An italoamerican teacher leads a nuclear bomb drill in a 50's school classroom. The drill seems useless and absurd to her since she knows it wouldn't really help in case of an actual nuclear attack (the drill only consists on telling the kids to duck and cover under their desks and providing them with some helmets). Also, she is uncapable to feel actual fear about communism or a nuclear attack. She proceeds to lead the drill as a routinary, bitter task that means nothing to her. After she gives the boys dem helmets, they all cover under their desks and the teacher does the same. The teacher starts feeling anxious cuz joke's on her, now she's alone with the drill which means nothing to her, cannot even entertain herself with the leading role. She starts sweating and shit and prays a catholic prayer, hoping the drill to end. Then she has allucinations of nuclear shit mixed with catholic stuff, has an epiphany and dies from a heart attack.

I'm currently thinking of the details of a new thing I want to write, not sure yet if it'll end up as a short story or novel.
I got inspired to do it because I wanted to write something that incorporated more motifs, symbols, and "deeper meanings". I will focus on them whilst letting the story spin out around them.
What I have come up with so far is but a rough outline; The main character will be an ordinary person, faceless, without much information getting revealed about them. They love a woman, but it's neither romantic nor friendship love, and whilst trying to find out what it is, they get involved with other people - who can end up in the position of lovers - to in the end find their own version of love and identity.
>>
>>8155102
I started off by writing short stories. I dabbled in poems a bit, which were easier to write, but also felt more cringeworthy to me.
I would like to actually finish a longer project in the near future, such as a novellete or novella.

A stylistic hybrid of Huck Finn and Finnegans Wake where a Messianic young country bumpkin and his small town companions deal with the transition from Modernism to Postmodernism. He makes his way to The City, where his unironic ways are initially met with derision and suppression but eventually come to be the salvation of The City and the resolution of Postmodernism as a whole.

I'm trying to write a modern fantasy thing about several of competing secret societies trying to control artifacts from another world. Now that I've started writing, I've realised that I probably don't have enough scenes for a novel. I thought I'd write chapters but they're only like 1600 words.

Finished first poetry collection a couple of months ago - currently seeking publishers while working on the second collection/ dat novel we always talk about writing.

Recently published poems by international journals.

It's been a wild ride. Actually just got through reading about some guy who thinks he should quit his job to work strictly on the writing - I really can't recommend any one method.

However, I've been working since I was 14 years old. Attempted school, dropped out. Worked some more, at the most - spent a year a half working retail. These last 2 months I've been unemployed, traveling (able to do so by saving most of what I earned through various jobs).

I'm sick of writing gay, furry straight-up fapfics so I thought I'd try gay, furry romance, but I hate romance so to keep myself sane it's two grizzled soldiers on opposite sides trapped in an endless modern-day Cold War gone hot without nuclear weapons who end up cut off and isolated in harsh terrain and who must co-operate to survive. They end up fucking lovelessly in a kind of sailors-on-shore-leave desperate release and dominance thing but slowly grow to become friends just in time to return to their respective armies and be faced with the difficult choice of love or duty.

It's a "can love bloom on the battlefield" kind-of deal.

I have loftier ambitions for my other stories but this seems to be the only thing I can actually write large amounts for. It's not explicit though, and I can't decide if it should be. If it were I have no doubt I'd get a larger audience, but despite writing tens of thousands of words of porn I kinda don't want this to be porn.
>>
>>8159228
That sounds like plot, not theme.

If you want to use symbols and motifs have like 4 plots that all parallel each other revolving around the same theme. For example:
A father whose wife dies in childbirth and must care for the new baby whom he blames for the death despite knowing it's irrational to do so and learn to love it.
A revolutionary who has successfully overthrown the old government and must now form a new one.
A businessman whose company is bankrupt who must manage his downward personal spiral into unemployment and ennui and rescues himself from it by starting a new business enterprise.
A criminal turned priest who is a changed man, but whose violent past continues to hound him (basically Les Mis).

The theme is death and rebirth.

If you want to be really meta, have each plot explore a different aspect of the theme. Why do people fail at their rebirth? That's one plot. How do you succeed at it? That's another plot. What even is death? What counts as death and rebirth? That's a third plot.

Etc.

Don't take my example too seriously, it's bullshit I came up with in 5 minutes. I'm just trying to get the point across.

I've always liked worldbuilding, and I developed an interest in constructed languages, but all I seem to be able to get myself to write these days is multi-page disections and poetry about why I hate myself.
>>
>>8154958
An epic trilogy of fantasy novels. I'm world building right now and making everything not sound or seem stupid and contradictory is proving to be quite the task. I've got a healthy amount of lore though, I'm trying to figure out the exact tone I want to go for. Something that doesn't take itself too seriously, but something that will also hit all the right notes emotionally when the time comes.
>>
>>8155102
I started when I was a little kid, just writing stupid ideas I thought of while watch TV or reading. Sort of like an adult fan fic that morphed into something far better. I then started reading all the greats and reading them many times to figure out what exactly about their stories worked and didn't work to incorporate into my own stories.

tl;dr: started with short stories, grew into novels
>>
>>8155189
no need to concern yourself with being upset over a genuine problem. Writers block for me is the result of a lack of inspiration and a lack of direction with where I want to go with the story. The Bible put it the best, "there is nothing new under the sun". Trying to achieve that great story without getting help from other sources is an unrealistic expectation. All the greats had mentors and inspirations and you should too. Be humble enough to realize when you are out of your area of expertise in certain aspects of the story and visit stories that handled those aspects well. See what they did that successfully bridged the writer's block gap. I'm not saying to completely lift ideas from them, but they can always give you a nudge in the right direction
>>
>>8161537
It's a tough bet, if you believe in yourself I'd say quit your job, but if you have any doubt stay with the job. Just realize that retail work is ambition poison. I've seen dudes who worked as the same place for 17 years and its scary enough to make me go chase my dreams

my nigga, that's one of my influences too. What makes that series great is the characterizations and the genuine moments.

I'd say start by working out the machinations of the characters and the roles each of the characters plays in the Protagonist's life. Beyond the basic elements of story telling (Setting, Conflict, Theme, Resolution) I'd say write the scenarios in your story that would illicit the same kind of reactions you'd expect when reading a good story.

I'm writing a short story about a company's outwardly jolly director slowly becoming obsessed with the young cleaner, and becoming increasingly jealous and antagonistic towards his top employee, seen through the eyes of the company's intern.

Thing is, I'm unsure whether to have the narrator (the intern) address the reader directly, or have him describe the story to another character a la heart of darkness. In any case it's related in past tense, with hints to the tragedy that is the result.
