I prefer to read a few different translations of a work paired with the original, although this is only really ideal for books you already have great interest in. Beowulf is a good piece for that kind of study.

Heaney, and get the bilingual edition so you can compare with the original OE so you can get a feel for its rhythm, it'll make you appreciate it more

Seconded. I have this one.

Donaldson. Trust me. I have a dozen versions, and some are great poetic reads (Heaney), some are interesting and unusual (Morris), the original is the best (the first way I read it, during an Old English course), but Donaldson is still the most faithful solid readable version.

Tolkien. But also Heaney.

I love both Heaney and Tolkein as writers, but I would not recommend their versions for a new reader. It's sorta like Pope's translation of the Illiad
