How do I resist the desire to write schlock?
For reference, and I struggle to name an example that won't make you erupt in argument, the Flash Gordon movie is schlock.
Maybe I would intellectualise it, but the core plot would be schlock.

Flash Gordon's a camp classic m8. It has Brian Blessed, Timothy Dalton, a sexy catfight scene, and goddamn Queen on the soundtrack. Plus it's hugely self-aware about how cheesy it is.

Actually, how about a sci-fi coming of age story? Basically Harry Potter in space. I think Ender's Game is kind of like that, but since the author's a massive homophobe I think people are looking for something to replace it.
