It's a social thing to get into largely because sailing is something learned from doing over reading about. You'll have to talk with someone to get into it, unless you have money and don't care about making an ass of yourself.
Me, I'd like to have a boat when I'm old, but as I am I'll just settle for a kayak for now.

Do you mean sailing as in sailing a sailboat or sailing as in becoming a merchant mariner?
Merchant marine in the US is largely foreigners, so you most likely wouldn't understand most of them even if you did speak. If you have no experience standing watches or working engines your best bet might be learning to peel potatoes and wash dishes cause you'll probably be kitchen help.
