Does Bodine appear that early? I thought he didn't appear til the ferryman, Whatsisname Ice.

such a great book. my favorite part was when the ghastly fop took over lel
It's a journey of a lifetime, Op. Have fun. Prepare for unexpected, powerful feels.

Would it be retarded to try this out as first Pynchon ?

A little, yes.

no that's what I did. this is a pynchon book that people who don't read pynchon would like. I could give it to my grandfather and he would have a riproaring good time.

not true. it's his most accessible work. you don't need to start anywhere, with any author. anyone who thinks you do is a fag. read what ever you want.
I've read GR as the first and only Pynchon novel so far and would say that it was a love-hate relationship. Some parts I enjoyed immensely; some parts made me want to throw the book away. Overall it was a struggle but worthwhile in retrospect.
I've been curious about reading another Pynchon novel and am wondering how M&D compares to the abovementioned. I know it's long as fuck, but is it also notoriously difficult to get your head around? Or is it more of a pleasant read?

Challenging but fun.
Give it a try.

Much easier than GR, but arguably just as complex. Takes a few dozen pages to get used to the faux-archaic prose style but it's pretty smooth sailing after that. (Especially in contrast to GR, which only gets harder as it goes on.)
