I'm 250 pages into the book but it is really convoluted and hard to get into right now. Does it get any better?

Considering the first 800 pages are torture, yes. Asoiaf at least has characters.
But this is finished so basically they are the exact opposite, one has a garbage first book and the other gets worse as it goes on.

Starting with the second book the series gets really great.
GotM is confusing because very little is explained but that also gets better with time because it will (slowly) make sense.
