Quite good. Lulu is amazing though.

This man, in my country, he is...quite something.
His latest 800-page magical-realist cinderblock sells like hot rolls. Haven't read it but the reviews say it seems grossly unedited by about 300 pages or so. It seems his editor is so enamoured with whatever this guy writes that he'll lap up everything, and so will the public.

I haven't read him, but from the few fragments and interviews I've seen, he seems to really try to sound deep and always falls flat, ending up sounding like a high school poet trying desperately to impress girls by forcing a deep, apparently profound stare after every cringey line he says. Maybe his stories give those apparent platitudes meaning and I just had an erroneous first impression, but right now I see him as just a sexy hipster magnet and certainly not a potential Nobel prize winner as some make him out to be.

Sounds about right, just like every other Romanian intellectual who's also a popular public figure. Sort of a Romanian Franzen (not in themes or style, of course, and probably a worse writer too).

Absolut dezgustator
If you really want to get a god taste of what romanian lit is all about read Marin Preda's "Morometii Family" and "The Most Beloved of Earthlings". Evreything before 1900 (except for Eminescu) is not worth reading.

I didn't say I liked it either. I tried to cover as much as possible. Also, I'm pretty sure he will enjoy reading 1k pages about a peasant family. If it was about peasants, I could have recommend him "Ion", but I didn't.
