recognize the summer

let's not be plebs and read gay, pointless infinite jest. let's read something with some literary merit.

starting Monday June 13 /lit will be reading the recognitions! we will be reading 100 pages a week and having daily/weekly discussions.

don't be a pseud and fall for the infinite jest. try reading a book that actually relates to us. like the recognitions.

recognize.

Seasonally, The Recognitions is more of a winter book T B H. Though I'm reading it now myself (at page 630 now) and do agree that it's infinitely better than Dave's jest.

no, IJ is a bad book written by a shabby person
>>
>>8120116
I've seen the edition OP posted in three separate bookstores last week alone. You're either retarded or are living in some backwoods redneck hickpit.

Though if you want daily numbers of pages/parts to read/stop at I guess someone would have to partition that out themselves.

Goethe's Faust is probably the biggest one since the book started out as a parody of it. He mentions a lot of stuff but you don't really need to be that well read to catch a lot of the references. Also use this site if you really need annotations

http://williamgaddis.org/recognitions/preface.shtml

though it gives a couple of things away ahead of time so you might not want to use it that extensively until after you've finished the book.
>>
>>8120243
yeah fuck that website. it gives so much shit away beforehand for now reason.
>>
Is Against the Day a good book for the summer? I want a long, thick literary brick to read during the warm months
>>
>>8120242
That's a good idea!
It might be more organized that way
>>
>>8120307
I'd pick mason and Dixon if your going with pynchon.
>>
everyone read about 15 pages a day.

It's the first edition that comes up when you search for it on Amazon.

JR is already kicking my ass hard :(
>>
>>8120315
I liked M&D more than GR. Was not expecting such wonderful characters.

Read IJ when I was sixteen, and I thought it was the bomb diggity. Read The Recs a year or two later, and in hindsight IJ is definitely the weaker book. The Walrus's books are still well worth the read though, imo.
I'm halfway through J R and it's tons of fun, even though by all rights it should be the most stressful book one could read.

Mason & Dixon seems more suitable for autumn or winter
>>

Amen
>>
>>8121060
Same. I have literally every Gaddis book expect JR now. Fucking dalkey and their incompetence.
>>8121091
Where do you live? Though you could just order it online. It's not being scalped to hell and back like JR is it?
>>
Will I finish the book by June if I am able to read 50 pages a day? Is this rate possible?
>>
>>8121403
Yeah. It's just short of 1,000 pages long.
But if you read it that fast it will really fuck with you
>>
>>8121403
50 pages a day is more than doable. You can even go faster than that if you want. I got up to part III in two weeks.
>>8121409
Fuck with him how? It does start to get a tad... mean spirited around the 400 page mark, I guess, but still.
>>
>>8120307
Lot 49 is his summeriest book. Though V. isn't too far off either.
>>
>>8122493
lot 49 is hardly a long, thick literary brick though.

>>8123249
I read GR and Ulysses before IJ. In fact, I bought GR and Ulysses before even coming here and only got IJ because of the memes.
>>
>>8123254
I had infinite jest and Ulyssess before coming here. weird.
>>
>>8123254
I read Ulysses last Summer, but which do you think is better- GR or IJ? I'm looking for a long, fun read this summer.
>>
>>8123320
honestly infinite jest shouldn't even be in the meme trilogy. it's so basic and easy to read. it's just long. read GR.
