Do you force yourself to read certain things to get all the background info for things you are interested in, or just read only whatever you are currently interested in?

I read all that background shit.
If I'm interested in something, I'm also interested in the background info.
So, I guess I read whatever interests me.
The background info for things I'm most interested in regularly interests me as well.

Why make it a point to do either consistently? I just decide on the basis of a particular work.I didn't start with the Greeks, if that was your question
I do both and am unable to balance the two. So then I tel myself "This is fine, lots of people read four or five books at once." and then I end up deriving less pleasure from reading because I'm getting all antsy about the books that I'm not reading.
