I think DFW was actually fairly well acknowledged in his time. Plath and Rimbaud definitely weren't.
But DFW definitely benefits from that Hemingway-esque artistic suicide romance.
It's weird how death does this with people in any culture for some reason. So many awful artists' legacy was well and truly cemented due to their early death. It's not a nice way to think about it, but it's realistic. I mean, DFW, Rimbaud, Keats and a great many other celebrities (not only writers) weren't as great as we like to think of them. It's just the way of the world. Martin Luther King Jr was a womanizer and if JFK wasn't assassinated he'd probably be the most hated President of all time (seriously, if you think about all the shit he got us into and how he was focusing on being fucked during the Bay of Pigs he was a terrible, terrible POTUS) but because they died early we will always herald them.
