He wrote funny shit that sometimes made people sad. That's it. People like to pretend he's all poetic and stuff, but in reality, all he did was write about shitty rich people with a few dick jokes in between scenes. The fact that people proclaim he's a genius is largely based on the fact that he got away with this.

Anglicanism was the dominate religion, English became modern, and it became the dominate language. Remember, before the Elizabethean Era, the aristocracy spoke mainly French, the religion was Latin, and the Kings bowed to Rome. Around the 1600d is when England truly cemented itself as a world power.
During his life time, Shakespeare wasn't as nearly popular as he was today. Proud English historians in the 1800, looking back on the Elizabethan Era, realized they needed an icon; Shakespeare was the main choice. He's unique, mysterious, and defines the time period very well.
Since Anglo-Saxons dominated the globe, Shakespeare spread along.
In short, it's a combination of three things
1) Him being a very talented play wright
2) Historians were eager to find a true Englishman to represent an important time in English history
3) Shakespeare was at the right place at the right time
Because he invented thousands of English words due to illiteracy. So now we study the effects of a stupid man on classical theatre.
