Why can't i find the original greek myths (or any myth stories for that matter) anywere on the net? We use them to flavor our stories and refrence them to the point that you would think WE made them, but i can't read them any were? I want to read about the trials of herculeas, and all the other greek myth heros. I want to read about the clash of the titans, but i can't because apparently hollywood has them locked up in a vault somewhere only to be taken out to make movies. Can someone point me to were i can read most (if not all) the stories in there original form? (Translated to english of course) not a summary or synopsis that seems to fill the internet. And thats the thing, im also intrested in mythology stories of ALL nations african, norse, australian, native american... But if greek is the best /lit/ can do for me i guess i can settle (but bonus points if you can point me to myth stories of other nations to)
Sorry for the rambling, but can you help me anons?

Here: http://www.library.theoi.com/

The best surviving works, as you probably know already, are from Homer, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides.

Check out here too: http://www.theoi.com/Bibliography.html

The entire Theoi website is good for the matter.

Keep in mind there's no such thing as the 'original story', ancient Greek culture was mainly transmitted by oral forms and poets and rhapsodes used to modify the myths by their own desires. Even in tragedies, the mythical stories differ between the authors.

to read them in their original form you should read the original sources like the ancient poems, plays etc

later the ancients even began to compose mythological anthologies like apollodorus' 'the library', you can read it too

go here http://www.theoi.com
find a myth which is interesting to you and the article will have a ton of references to the original sources like iliad, odyssey, theogony etc

now, the most overarching original myth encyclopedia in one book it is probably 'methamorphoses' by ovid, it's a lengthy epic poem, it's written in the roman times though... if you want to read a much more ancient account read 'theogony' by hesiod, it's an epic poem too, it's much shorter and so has much less myths

In terms of primary sources, these two volumes contain the totality of what we know about Greek Mythology:

'Anthology Of Classical Myth: Primary Sources in Translation': https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/468585.Anthology_of_Classical_Myth
'Apollodorus' Library and Hyginus' Fabulae: Two Handbooks of Greek Mythology': https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1389340.Apollodorus_Library_and_Hyginus_Myths

>original greek myths
original sources never exists.
furthermore all so-called ancient greek literature was written by humanists started from 12-13 centuries

Are you illiterate or just a complete fucking retard? OP said:

Op here
What i ment to say was that i want to read the original stories as translated into english that adheres as closesly to the original narrative as possible. I don't just want to read a SYNOPSES, or SUMMARY, or footnotes or review or documentary or something that talks ABOUT the story. I want to read the actuall story without commentary from a third party, my problem is that is what mostly fills the internet, commenters about the greek myths not the stories them selves

btw you can find loeb editions of all that stuff on the internet and those have both greek or latin and english texts, they are bilingual

they are usually pdfs with yellow pages (scans from very old books) though and are not that easy to read, they also have old translations, sometimes pretty nice ones, if you don't mind having rhymes which greeks didn't use (i personally don't)
