In English phonetics, the vowel-consonant-vowel order determines that the first vowel sound is long, while vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel determines the first vowel sound is short. This is why verbs ending in "n" such as "begin" as a gerund must have another "n" as in "beginning," or it would look like it's pronounced "begy-ning."
