I don't even know what you're asking OP.
Psychedelics do exactly as the name implies, they manifest the mind. They are tools for engaging with the unconscious mind in a similar fashion to dreams. They can be used for the entertainment factor of the "light show" or as tools for personal insight. There are always the nutters that go on about going to different dimensions or something something pineal gland etc. It doesn't mean they are useless.
What, other than Huxley, is some good literature on this? I'm a little leery of McKenna.

As a chemist Shulgin straddled the line between mysticism and empiricism in a way that is really pleasant to read. I highly recommend PIHKAL as an introduction to a delightful array of drugs and the accompanying mental modulations.
