Unfortunately, David Foster Wallace has a much better handle on writing interesting things than I do, so it would be poor fan fiction if I tried to finish his work for him.

I like accounting, guys! My dad was an accountant. Every day when he got home, he would tell me about his work. All of these things about how companies work, and stories from places he audited. I found it fascinating, and now I'm going for an accounting degree. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, huh?
Besides, someone has to do it, right?

Another idea; Think of Camus' "The Myth of Sisyphus". Pushing a boulder up a hill for it to roll back down forever may be monotonous, painful, and pointless, but as human beings, we can decide how we choose to feel about things. You need not despair. We can feel joy if we WANT to!
"One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

Pic related is my school! NY is fun.
>>
>>8072428
Everything that you would expect is worth reading.
The Scarlet Letter
Brave New World
Sherlock Holmes
Tortilla Flat
The Pearl
The Great Escape
Anything by Heinlein (I prefer Strangers in a Strange Land)
Silmarillion
In Cold Blood
Forget "The Third Man" book; watch the film instead, it's a really good film noir.

Dude, besides the manga, the books you have are all pretty well known for being great reads. Don't let /lit/ discourage you from reading because your books aren't obscure enough for them. You have good taste, even if it's mainstream. As long as you're reading, I'm happy.
>>
>>8072230
What do you use to hold your books, may I ask? Do you pile them in a stack on the floor? I thought about doing that, because it looks cool, but then my books would get all dusty!

I'm getting into accounting myself. I've been working at a small firm for the past 4 months. I really like it, and it's interesting work imo.

I went into it with no intentions, but now I might go for my CPA designation since I already have an undergrad. I even bought a used accounting textbook I've been working through.

I always had the misconception that it is boring work, and while it can be tedious if you can see the bigger picture it's really neat.

kind of disappointing tbqhwy, though I like your cool mugs unless upon closer observation they're tied to Game of Thrones or contain some other "omg so nerdy" reference in which case I'm nevertheless still jealous of your floor space and disposable income.

that shelf could work as an art installation

I laughed when I saw an entire shelf of stephen king books.

then i saw the second and laughed.

then i saw the third and laughed harder.

I saw the fourth and stopped laughing.

The Barnes and Noble Glitter edition book collection.

the video game replicas

a short swiffer tucked in above the """adult""" comics and the Heroes:the tv show: the book

two shelves of terry brooks, some robert jordan, game of thrones, harry potter, eragon.

the mugs that I can't identify but are probably harry potter or from a video game

book ends that look like stray pieces of garbage

it's a shame the picture is low quality. I'd love to see the rest of the collection

It's not the books that indicate that he's a an at least slightly well-off idiot, it's the Buster Sword and Portal gun replicas. I can't think of any reason to buy those unless you just want to flush money down the toilet.

1. I played Final Fantasy 7, like a lot of people who flowered into adulthood towards the end of the 20th century.

2. I wasn't aware they were so cheap. Besides, there's variety in replicas and I'm no Buster Sword appraiser so I can't tell you with exactitude how much he paid for it.

3. Don't mistake me. I'm not praising his taste, I obviously think it's tacky.

I like your collection of books. I just started to read 6 months ago and will take quite a while to reach this many books. Have you read them all or do you buy them in a mass quantity for a big backlog? I usually only have 6 or less books in my backlog.

Besides the manga, it's been about six years since I started my collection. Pic is what it was like back then.

My backlog's usually about a third of them now, including things like the reference works and anthologies (most of which I'll probably never read the whole way through). I spent several years abusing my university's very great inter-library loan system, so there's several hundred I've read but don't own. Most of my book buying lately has been picking up the ones I really loved but read through the library, plus kid's books.

What's in your backlog right now?

Shelves fill up really quickly if you hit up antiquaries, flea markets, that kind of stuff, or maybe they're phasing out books at your university and you can just come and pick them up for free.
The sheer amount of new books I see on /lit/ almost has me believe everyone's either a richfag or still living at home because the only new books I buy are the ones for my courses and the ones I'm gifted, everything else I find for cheap around the city.
Granted, you probably won't find exactly 'that' book you want, but you'll find plenty of classics anyway (I found the collected works of Goethe and Lessing for free) and you'll end up with a diverse library that doesn't look like a meme.

I have saved easily around 500 or 600 dollars buying books at different thrift stores in different cities and by occasionally revisiting the ones in my city.

Its caused me to have a huge backlog but 85% of the them are books I would have wanted to read eventually anyway so its better to buy them for 50 cents instead of ~10 dollars from amazon or Barnes and Noble.

not that guy, but I live in Lima, a place where humidity is 89% and it an go to 94% during winter, so I wrap the books I am not reading in polyethylene plastic bags and have to keep them in my room that has a dehumidifier. Otherwise they get those yellow stains all over the pages. Paperbacks would only last 4 years and hardcovers a few years more if I didnt do that. Also I am allergic to every king of fungus. I haven't read it yet. Read M Train though, and that's killer. She made me feel a lot while saying very little. She's just a normal lady, no blown up superstar, and she makes it feel good to get up in the afternoon and eat some brown toast with olive oil. Then again, she also is a superstar and toured with Dylan and is a furious Blakean and the M Train has value for that and her reflections and devotion to literature.
