/lit/ masturbates to Harold Bloom on a regular basis. But who is the Roger Ebert of literary criticism?
Ebert was a film critic who loved Ingmar Bergman and also defended Star Wars as a significant work of film.
Roger Ebert was basic.

Ebert has no parallel in literature because he appreciated entertainment and artistic value as separate entities. In literary criticism, entertainment value is ignored.
Ebert would review a film by putting himself in the shoes of a member of the intended audience. His greatest strength was his insistence to not judge a film purely by artistic merit, if the film was not trying to be art.
He got it wrong on occasion, but he stood apart because he recognised that his job was to advise the reader as to whether a film was worth their time.
His separation and equal treatment of art and entertainment guarantees there is no analogous literary critic. The man was one of a kind.
