Characters that change, that grow in personality, who learn things... Is this a worthwhile premise for a sci-fi novel?

If done right but its sci-fi so you're already wrong. Sci-fi is more about world building, spooky plot, or 2deep4u messages, not character development.Don't rely on other peoples opinions for your novel, work on your novel and submit it for publishing. If you like it, do it.

that's basically the plot of heinlein's double star :^)
that comic is gay since it makes the assumption that chads aren't engineers when in reality the only bigger chad than an engineer is maybe an architect or business major...it would have been better if they were sociology majors who white knighted for female and minority failure for four years and then discover all the chicks marry the chad from the business school because sociology majors don't make any money

That comic is some cringeworthy shit.

Why limit yourself to things every novel does?

>engineers aren't a bunch of beta losers
Good one. Engineering majors are some of the biggest betas around.
Thats literally the basics of storytelling OP

that's why they overcompensate for their small metaphorical penis by holding the whole power of the machine civilizations in their hands
how kipling described it
>They say to mountains ``Be ye removèd.'' They say to the lesser floods ``Be dry.''
p.s. the sons of mary are the chads
Characters that evolve? Never heard of it, but sounds intriguing. You should patent that shit.
