For the longest time I thought Hesiod was Heisod (Hey-zod)

I thought Pynchon was some kind of French so I pronounced it "Pynsh-own" and not "Pinch-on"
>>
>>8023346
you were actually closer with the first one, it's just that everyone pronounces it the second way.
>>
>>8023311
I called:
Neiztche "nits chey"
don quixote "don kwicks-ot
>>

I hates Ulysses and Infinite Jest
>>
>>8023356
So its something like "Pynch-Own"?
>>

Knee-chuh
>>
>>8023432
It's more like pynsch-awn
And there's no real emphasis between the two syllables

I keep thinking I'm going to get a paper cut on my pee hole.

>And there's no real emphasis between the two syllables
Then don't be a cunt about it, ya? The point was that it's more of an 'uh' not an 'ah'.

I know that pain, its especially horrid when you pick up all these continental names through your reading never actually hearing how they are said because it doesnt come up conversation.

It took nearly a decade before people picked me up on it

If you dedicated like twenty minutes to learning IPA, it wouldn't happen.

For the longest time I thought reading fiction and philosophy were garbage pursuits for Starbucks baristas. Now I just imagine the baristas happy.
>>
>>8023438
Wrong. It's Pinch-On.
>>
>>8023371
I thought it was Pinecone

I opened up a book at 6pm yesterday and here I am still up at 6am with the book still open infront of me without a page read

One of my classics professors in undergrad gave us the formula for how to pronounce Greek words in English.

First you Romanize it, so change all the upsilons to y's and so forth. Then you Anglicize it, that is pronounce the romanized version of the Greek word in the most horrendous King's English you can muster.

That's how you end up with Play Toe, Aiskilees, and Zeno Fon

Do you mean, how do americans pronounce it?

We pronounce plah-ton over here in Spain.
>>
>>8024434
plah-ton is how it's pronounced in Greek, and most European languages follow suit. English, both British and American, says Play-Toe.

At least we're not Chinese. Bo La Tu 柏拉图.

Ching chang chong.

My native language is spanish. For months I pronounced Pynchon by its sound of the word in spanish - \piːnˈchȯn\

I don't care about pronunciations of names.
When I am reading a book in which a characters have foreign names/surnames, instead of wasting time trying to learn the correct pronunciations I will just substitute it in my mind for something common.

For example, when reading Crying Lot I substituted Oedipa Maas' name with Massive Slut.

Philosophy major here. I used to pronounce Nietzsche as "Nye-etch"

Also I have a bad case of Tsundoku.

I read something like 1 book a month but I'm more than happy to take place in discussion (usually from a contrarian standpoint)
