Have you read enough to know good prose from bad? Usually the words just sound better in their own tongue. Its really a lot of effort if you are spending years to learn a language just for a few books.

Also, I seriously dislike english translations. I have seen this happening a lot with german -> english translations. Some german words are not that complicated or "heavy", but for some reasons, english translators feel the urge to search for the most obscure synonym they can find.
spanish -> english translations seem ok though.

If you learned English in America you can start off slow by becoming familiar with Australian English or British English. It's like a redneck listening to a rap song. Most of the references go over your head. A long time ago I read the British version of Alice Adventures In Wonderland it blew my fucking mind. After that I decided to learn Spanish and Italian. Now I'm working on learning German and Russian.
