What are some unique books about dystopias? Surely there are other ways of doing it. Are there more happy dytopias, like Brave New World?
>>

Brave New World is terrifying though. Unless you mean it as in people are happy in it then.

Yes. I'm interested in the idea of the happy dystopia where the people go along with it because they feel their meetings are being met. Or maybe they're actually being met. Can there be a functional, altruistic dystopia?
>>
>>8002571
BNW definitely is functional and altruistic. The main character's conflict comes from not being able to accept it.

Vonnegut's Mechanical Piano is rather happy. Not much worse than IRL, at least.

Pick one, and only one. The genre has been beaten to death. Read 1984 and Brave New World and you've read all you need.

So he can't brave the new world, that's interesting.

At least add We.

It's entry-level but Anthem is somewhat like this. There's nothing horrific going on in the society Ayn Rand constructs, and no one seems to be particularly unhappy with it. It's just overwhelmingly collectivist, which the main character doesn't like. You can argue its against human nature to mute individuality, but overall it was an okay society as far as dystopias go.

The sleeper awakes senpai

But the young adults love their dystopias.
Is there no originality to be wrung from the genre?
Are you one of those assholes who refuses to read anything new?
