Most of the time,nothing.
Sometimes I listen to some works of Liszt or Mozart. But that is rare.
Classic American lit - jazz, avant-garde
Classical lit - classical music
Maybe sometimes minimal electronic
or otherwise nothing, but the people I live with and the hospital I have to go to twice a week are so loud and obnoxious it becomes kind of necessary.
mostly nothing, but if I do listen to something, it's Brian Eno. I can't concentrate when I listen to what I usually listen to (punk mostly)
When I'm reading /lit/? This.
I like to listen to A7X or BMTH when reading Ulysses
usually nothing but I listen to stars of the lid to block other sounds
I try to avoid listening to anything, but sometimes I find it necessary to block out background noise. In that case, I try as well as I can to match the mood of the music to the mood of what I'm reading, so as not to 'poison' the aesthetics. So if I'm reading Elizabethan lit, I'll throw on John Dowland or some other lute music; if I'm reading something from the turn of the century, I might put on some Debussy; if it's Thomas Pynchon, maybe I'll play The Beach Boys at low volume. Certainly nothing too intense.
