they told me Wallace was good, Mccarthy was bad, and the whale bits could be excised with no detriment to the text at large

I don't
Tbh I've read like two comics that were recommended to me here and not a single book (although some discussions here have catalyzed a couple of reads).

But friend, I'm already sitting down! Hahaha!
>board name says '/lit/ - Literature'
>>
>>7978455
Really? My shittalk of GoT is pretty much the sole reason my friends respect my opinion on anything. There are so many real, non-meme problems with it that you'd have to be a moron to screw up explaining why it's for plebs.

Was it the book or the show though? Show is much, much easier.
>>
>>7978573
Would you mind sharing these real, non-meme problems? Both show and books.

Show (kek)
>D&D started cutting stuff for brevity and nobody complained about a noticeable drop in quality, so then they got it into their heads that they were good enough to modify GRRM's story willy nilly, and now we have the Bad Poosies casually murdering their family members for not taking revenge against people who are dead.

>Their changes to characterization, I actually liked the minor ones in the first season like making Ned a bit more warm, or Robert and Cersei almost amicable at times, but then they seemed to get shortsighted and overly ambitious leading to contradictory messages and stupid nonsense. Why did Jaime kill his innocent cousin? Are we supposed to believe he's a bastard at heart? It comes right as he's supposed to be on the trail to going straight so it castes a shadow over everything that follows.

Books
>Story is mostly plot-driven, soap opera style, with a massive cast all just bouncing off of each other and occasionally dying to raise stakes. After 5 books you can Still count the interesting people on your hands. Jaime, and that's about it.

>Even though it's how he's marketed to retards GRRM isn't a master of stories and worldbuilding on the level of Tolkien. The story was originally intended to be shorter and it really shows. The pacing completely dies in several sections and often seems to devolve into a directionless mess of characters sitting around while they wait for important events to happen to characters on another continent so that their plot can have its turn to move. Dance With Dragons took however long to write and is just 50% Dany sitting on her ass eating dates or Jon Snow getting increasingly anxious about the situation at the wall. I don't even remember the other bits in that fucking book. Tyrion might have made two boat trips over the course of 300 pages devoted to him, I don't remember.

This post is too long now, if the new book comes out I might read it eventually but I'm not excited.

I found myself in a rut, reading the same sort of stuff all the time (mainly sci-fi)

So I came here and found people recommending books all over the place. Sweet.

That this book was bad. I finally read it. I was so good that my White male ego started to cry. This is a masterpiece that we're too stupid to appreciate in this lifetime. He will be viewed as the next Plato centuries from now.

Here's your (You), please go back to bed

Read Catch 22, Flowers for Algernon, or Confederacy of Dunces. These are what novels should be.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who think the novel is a vehicle to show the world how smart you are. These people really need to fuck off (although they never will)
>>
>>7982353

Also, Le Carre's Karla trilogy is great. Interesting look at the western intelligence community during the cold war. The BBC miniseries is also great.
