Hey, /lit/. I recently read Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky Brothers, and i really enjoyed it. What did you think of the book? I'm not very good at starting discussion, but i'd like to talk with someone about it.
it's great

It's disgusting that people put scenes from the film adaptation on the book
I’ve only seen the movie it inspired—which I loved. How different is the novel? I was under the impression that rather than a direct adaption from the source material, Stalker was more or less using the ideas present in the original and presenting them in a new way.

actually the game is more like the book, there's a ton more supernatural stuff in the book than the film.

Russian sci-fi is a lot different than the American one. A lot more depressing, a lot more humane, a lot more human. The future is there, but it's not the focus. Roadside Picnic is a great experience, different from the film, different from the game. Read it for what it is.
How many translations of it are available? Is there any in particular that I should seek out?

There's a shit old one and a great 2012 one.

Old one is completely gutted story-wise, isn't it? The soviets censored large parts for authority disobedience or something.
