I've been enjoying book one of the Chronicles of Amber series. The writing is a little simple but overall it's been engaging
I just finished Le Guin's The Dispossessed and I'm not sure how to feel. The political philosophy was good and interesting but overall I'm not so sure how satisfying everything was. Anyone else read it?
Also, I'm looking for a really good military/hard/space opera sci-fi hybrid novel or novella. I have Dune already but is there anything less based on nobility? I just read two books about nobility.

Logan and Guts are alike in character although Logan can cause tragedy whilst Guts mostly receives it. They both wield huge ass swords and get their life fucked over by the Machiavellian character.
Both have comedic/more light hearted characters like the Navigator and Puck.
The atmosphere is very similar but Berserk is more episodic as of late.

It's an interesting novel for its political ideas.
Everything else about it is dry. The characters are loosely defied, have inconsistent speech patterns and the plot skips the climax.
Overall, Lathe of Heaven and Left Hand of Darkness are far better. I'd recommend The ones who walk away from Omelas as a short story.

MC wields a large ass sword, is prone to fits of berserker rage - one self induced, one constitutional and they have a love interest who is a talented warrior taken away from them in spirit by the villain - the first reverts to the mental state of a child and the second is mentally plagued by visions.
Both series have two realms each the obverse of the other which only certain individuals can perceive (one via a brand and the other by inheritance) and both series show the faults of giving into the temptation of accessing it.

Is Steven Erikson's writing TOO good?
Let me preface this by saying that I'm a huge Steven Erikson fan. I've started reading Fall of Light and, is it me, or is his prose becoming increasingly archaic? It's got to the point where it's like reading Shakespeare. It's one thing to produce a ripping yarn that's also very well written, it's another to have to parse the syntax in every sentence. I've been running out of good shit to read, so I just started reading Abercrombie's standalone novels. Anyone else notice that everything he writes is the fucking same? It's very good for the first 3/4 or so of the book, then the last quarter of the book is nothing but the characters bitching about how little choice they have in life and how they regret the shit they've done. Oh, and about how all killing is horrible and pointless and turns everyone into monsters.
Also, way, way too many timely rescues for major characters. It becomes very predictable--it's as if no major character is allowed to die until he's been rescued from the brink of death at least 3 times in the book.

It does. And the problem is that Mistborn lacks any of the over the top, insane stuff that TTGL has. The series becomes even more anime with the whole sword-bigger-than-wielder-nonsense and the fact that only the main character and her ilk is useful in any sense once the story starts to go off the rails, that Sanderson had to power boost her bf to make him relevant to the story. I haven't read the last book or any of Sandeson's other work, but I can't help but laugh when people hold up the Mistborn-series as some kind of masterpiece of fantasy.

I guess no one has read it. Anyway, 75+% of it is historical fiction, following various immortals as they appear from about 4000BC on, culminating in a slower-than-light space voyage. Themes include immortality (halted aging and somewhat accelerated healing), loneliness (immortality is exceedingly rare), and persecution (immortals tend to be executed as witches/sorcerers if discovered). It was a long, occasionally slow, read, but that could be due to not realizing the ratio of historical fiction to sci-fi. Overall I enjoyed it, and would recommend reading if my description interests you.

I enjoy it a lot, but it's not for everyone. The characters and prose are all right but have some flaws (descriptions can be very repetitive), the story is a little predictable, not in a bad way--it's a good old good vs evil, heroes journey to save the world type story, and it was done well. It's long winded as hell, if you just want to "know what happens", you'll be fucking miserable.
But the fucking worldbuilding dude. The detail and intricacy of the fictional world of Wheel of Time surpasses anything else I've ever seen in fantasy, Tolkein included. Each culture has a unique set of customs, attire, and societal norms, each nation has its changing allegiances, and each group or faction acts towards its goals in very realistic ways. All those things play off of and effect each other in very interesting, believable ways, it's like watching the workings of a really complicated clock. If that's what you like best in literature, WoT is a must read.

A couple philosophical monologues in an entire series is okay, to reveal a little more about how a character's mind works, but any more than that just comes across as a poor excuse for the author to enjoy making people read philosophical ramblings he's come up with and is secretly proud of.
Also, the way he made his decisions was always badly explained. It almost feels like he was doing everything on impulse. He kept swapping sides, disobeying orders and doing things that were really bad ideas in the long term, and the reader was never given a clue as to why.
Since I haven't enjoyed a single book /sffg/ has recommended to me, let's try something else:

Alright, try C. J. Cherryh's Russian Stories. Historical fantasy that's a bit dark in tone, borrowing mythological elements from Russian folklore.

Can confirm Rusalka is pretty gud, for horror I usually rec Lovecraft's crew - Hodgson, Chambers, Clark Ashton Smith, etc - but you said you were tired of old stuff so the best I can offer is Robert Shearman. He's pretty new, writes conceptually disturbing short stories, usually with a bit of fantasy or black comedy somewhere in the mix.
