You should have a very strong knowledge of Catholicism and Ireland in general, and that is a very complex task since a lot of it is lived. Portrait has a very sacramental atmosphere and is deeply rooted in Catholic aesthetics so it depends, how deep do you want to go?

This is the hardcore way, but some works which are easy and insightful, Catholicism by Robert Barron, Jesus of Nazareth trilogy by Joseph Ratzinger and his writings in general are pretty useful for the mindset.
