Was once cleaning a warehouse where old props that were once used on tv sets were stored. One such "prop" was a bookshelf still filled with books. I snagged volumes one and two of the cmplete short stories of W. Sommerset Maugham. They're fucking great btw.

It was where I started with him (aside from his great Intro to The Recognitions). 'The Pedersen Kid' was quite good, and the other stories were fine too, although I wasn't wowed by them as much as I expected to be. One thing for me that limits his appeal is his phallic preoccupation; it's not at drastic Updike levels, but still overly so. ymmv

Thanks familia. I'll probably check out Gaddis before Gass as well. Got to have your postmodernist Williams in order
>>
>>7948324

Having Gass write an Intro for The Recognitions was pretty inspired. It fit the counterfeiting motif of the book with its own meaning since Gass has at times been mistaken for Gaddis and could speak of himself as Fake William Gaddis.

By definition a collection of short stories is by a single author. A multi-author volume is called an anthology.

Anyway, for my choice, pic related.

Jesus' Son - Johnson

I highly recommend it.
>>
>>7949362
i read that very recently and really, really enjoyed it
i'm intrigued by the film of it
>>
>>7949367
How did you come across the title?

I know, me too, it's fucking good. Was at first skeptical of the reference to the Velvets, but that completely changed.

Emergency is probably my favourite story. Funny how I love this book but really dislike Henry Miller. It seems all so unnecessary and excessive in his case, while I don't have that feeling when reading Jesus' Son at all. It's immensely satisfying somehow, but you're actually reading the most terrible shit happening.
>>
>>7949367
Also, you might want to read Angels. It's his first novel, and many say it's just as good or better. I personally don't agree, but I recommend it.
>>
>>7949383
i previously read train dreams after someone recommended it and wanted more
it's very different, but equally good imo. in terms of similarities and what i like about him, they have that really nice dreamlike quality, where you can experience these terrible things but they feel oddly weightless and beautiful.
>>
>>7949391
Ordering Train Dreams right now.

I agree with your description, I had the same when reading Jesus' Son. Though I'm sure parts of Angels won't be weightless for you.
>>
>>7949360
i think his prose is phenomenal.
the beginning is a party for vollmann that his friends are throwing for him. you're introduced to the major players in the story (elaine suicide, ken, satoko, that girl named meghan maybe, i forget her name, but she's the ghost of magnetism) and are given a taste of vollmann's life. the next sections, east west north south (not necessarily in that order) are seemingly dreams or fantasies in which he goes from Tenderloin to those areas directly, although they aren't his destinations. he then actually leaves and struggles with that in his own ways. it ends with his acceptance of leaving his friends behind, then opens up the final section on elaine suicide.
it is some of the most beautiful writing i've ever seen, although i absolutely love experimental fiction. i thought it was a lovely story about the anxiety of leaving, of moving on. look at ken and satoko's relationship as well.
that's a relatively surface level reading of the story though
>>
>>7949429
really it's a story about having to leave a place and never wanting to, feeling as if you're magnetically pulled to this one place (for Vollmann that's Tenderloin), but knowing damn well you must leave. i found Vollmann did a wonderful job of showing us his life and what he loved so much about Tenderloin. we're able to feel his sadness and anxiety about leaving. additionally, the spattering of mentions of elaine suicide throughout (though none overt in Vollmann's love for her) and then ending the story on how hard it was to leave her left me in tears.

Sort of related: How do I know if I'm ready to read Gaddis or not?

I haven't read very difficult books to be honest. The most 'difficult' would probably be The Crying of Lot 49 and House of Leaves (TCoL wasn't too hard and HoL is probably the longest book I've ever read).
>>
>>7950975

Gaddis can be difficult. One aspect of that is dialogue. The Recognitions isn't as dialogue-heavy as JR, which is basically nothing but dialogue, but The R has plenty. Gaddis doesn't tell who is speaking, nor does he indicate when dialogue ends and description begins within a paragraph. It calls for close and careful reading.

Hold off then. Its not going anywhere.
