Anyone into cinema theory?
I've read Bazin, Tarkovskiy, Deren, a bit of Chion and a bit of Daney. Anything else interesting?
I'm french btw, if it helps to pick some books.
Read Deleuze. Cinema 1 & 2. You're extra lucky that you get to read it in its original language
>>7944796
b-but it looks really fucking hard, I don't know that much about philosophy & I think Deleuze makes a lot of references to psychoanalysis and semiotics.
Anyway I didn't consider that, I'll take a look at these. Thanks anon.
Read Bresson's Notes on the Cinematographer
Read Tolstoy's What is Art
>>7944815
>Read Bresson's Notes on the Cinematographer
Forgot to talk about it, but I already read it. Absolutely stunning, Bresson is one of the best director who ever lived imo.
I'll take a look at the other one tho, thanks anon.
Have read much about Japanese film?
>>7944887
I didn't read anything about it, but I haven't seen a lot of films tho. A lot of Kurosawa, one Naruse, some animated films, one avant-garde film (Page of Madness, can't remember the director).

Lit Bresson mon ami, Deleuze aussi.

Well Dziga Vertov's writings are really fun stuff, fairly interesting too if you're inro philosophy. Other than that Deleuze is nice, Pasolini's Eretical Empiricism, Brakhage Metaphors on Vision - don't know, just read philosophy when you're done and you'll think about movies differently. Cheers from Italy dude.

The Jew is immunized against all dangers: one may call him a scoundrel, parasite, swindler, profiteer, it all runs off him like water off a raincoat. But call him a Jew and you will be astonished at how he recoils, how injured he is, how he suddenly shrinks back: “I’ve been found out.”

OP, I third Delueze. Read his comments on "The Passion of Joan of Arc" and then watch the movie through its lens. It's really phenomenal
How is Eisenstein's "The Film Sense"?
>>7944796
>>7944807
deleuze is shit
i feel bad for everyone who has put in the work to understand deleuze, only to find now they look at works in deleuzian terms! how awful! there's no real need to study film theory, you're better, honestly, reading novels/poetry/the greeks
Also, Ozu is the GOAT film director. Ozu is to cinema what Tolstoy is to the novel.
>>7944826
>>7951678
Bresson has some moments but mostly it's quite bad stuff over hyped by contrarians.
A Man Escaped and Mouchette are quite good. The rest is meh. The strength is in the editing/sound. He developed some really interesting rhythms but the rest is SHIT.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vtKf3ftuVs
His theory of acting/pure cinema is garbage. He was just clever enough to edit well and use sound a split second before the image appears. In that sense his films really flow.
>>7945377
I will be honest to admit I never watched or heard of any of these movies, but I really want to know more.
Where did you got these from?
formalists are plebs
>>7945377
sounds like you need to get over the novelty of other cultural ideas about film friend

>>7951770
That doesn't make sense.
What about books with short-essays on movies?
Anyone likes this one?
>>7951860
It makes perfect sense
If you say youve seen kurosawa check Richie's book about him. theres also a conference about him on the site of the cinematheque, and also some 3 or 4 books about him in french.
>everyone saying deleuze because thats all they know
Deleuze is a hack. Dont check him unless you have an interest in his personal philosophy.
>>7951707
Ozu is to Cinema what Rockwell was to art.
>>7952718
>and here is what cinema is (in written form)

If you're keen on film realism, Zavattini's essays are a good start.
