Sorry about the shitty quality - taken with my old phone a while ago. Top one is from my room, bottom one living room. A bunch of comic books, novels, encyclopedias...

Picking up a new barrister bookcase to replace this ikea one I got from a friend. Pretty excited

A legit Amazona albifrons.
>>7942422
That copy is an exception when it comes to the usual crappy quality of B&N classic/special editions. It's surprisingly decent. It also has a pretty trippy cover with lots of indentation-work. I'd recommend it.
>>7942491
It just looks so unsightly...

Sweet! Can't wait to see more shelves packed with /lit/s favorite meme books

This is exactly the kind of bookshelf I want
>>7942491
It's full of typos. It's also overpriced and garish.
1435140370 is the one you want.
>>7942519
It's worth it when you consider that the B&N classics are only $20USD. If that. I haven't been to either B&N or the USA in almost a year. It could be cheaper now.
>>7942531
You will have to and you should calm down. Get a hobby like reading or croquet; being excited about seeing my books on a bookshelf is kinda pathetic.

I think I paid around $50-$60 on eBay for it. It was a couple of years ago so I don't really remember. It is well bound though (like all Folio books) and has held up well to reading/rereading (passages) so it was worth it. It also has the Mimmo Paladino etchings for each chapter.
I didn't mind the translation but I don't read Greek and I haven't read any other translations. The guy I borrowed it from said it was the assigned translation in his gov program at Harvard so I assumed it must be passable at a minimum.
>>7946256
Cool, there was a Folio Ulysses on ebay about a week ago for about that price but I didn't snag it and I guess someone else did. Usually they are like $100. It's the type of book I'd like to have a nice version of when I re-read (just have a cheap vintage paperback).
I read Bloom's Republic but I thought about going with that one, which is why I asked.
Nice collection by the way.
>>7946290
>I read Bloom's Republic but I thought about going with that one, which is why I asked.
For historical works of philosophy, always go with the Hackett translation/edition.
Especially avoid Penguin translations when it comes to philosophy.
>>7946320
>For historical works of philosophy, always go with the Hackett translation/edition.
I usually read Hackett. In fact, I have Plato's complete works, published by Hackett, which I purchased for a Plato course in undergrad. That was the version I read in college and I read Bloom recently on my reread because that's the one people seem to mention here. In fact, pic related recs Bloom for Republic and Hackett for everything else.
Having now read both Reeve and Bloom, I found both to be perfectly satisfactory and did not notice any significant differencesalthough I did read them years apart from eachother. I was just curious about that other translation. I think it is a relatively new one and Penguin also publishes a different translation too (correct me if I'm wrong).
>Especially avoid Penguin translations when it comes to philosophy.
I am looking at my bookshelf and I have Penguin translations of Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard. Is this bad?
>>7946320
Wait, I'm only about a third of the way through it so far. What is so bad about that translation and should I switch before finishing?
Do your worst.

>>7946472
Hey! I made that image. It's been revised since then.
>>7946472
Translation image guy again. I'm also huge on philosophy.
Penguin editions are generally terrible, it's true. That being said, they're great for Roman philosophy and for Nietzsche. When it comes to Kierkegaard, Hong translations are preferred, though I think Hannay is also acceptable.
And I don't have space for this in the translation image, but when it comes to Plato and Aristotle, anything translated by a Straussian will be an excellent translation. So Reeve, Benardete, Bloom, Chicago press in general, etc. For everything else (like the essential Menexenus), go for Hackett.
And, y'know, sometimes Jowett's ok too. He translated all of Plato's works and was a great scholar who deserves recognition. That being said, I only read him alongside other translations.
>>7953199
Fuck, didn't mean Reeve, meant Carnes Lord.
