Who's the American James Joyce? Brazil has one.
>>
Faulkner, no? Either him, or Burroughs.
>>
Faulkner, Pynchon, Barth, Gass, McElroy, take your pick. American lit owns
>>
There isnt one
>>
The crucial question: who is the English Joyce?
>>
Who is the American...
...Tolstoy?
...Proust?
...Dickens?
>>
>>7925558
>american lit
>good

faulkner is corncob man, pynchon is juvenile, gass is interesting, barth is good but gimmicky and limited, and mcelroy is a meme

Hes more than decent, and the only reason he isnt revered like joyce is that hes still alive. His reputation will match joyce's after enough time.

This isn't possible as 'America' is not as localized as Ireland. You're better off asking who is the Southern James Joyce (Flannery) or the western James Joyce (Annie Proulx) or the mid-Atlantic James Joyce (John Cheever) or the California James Joyce (do they read out there?)
>>
>>7925870
>Proulx

>O'Connor instead of Faulkner
Yikes
>>
>>7925882

Unless you are BR Myers, why don't you make the point yourself instead of giving us a link?

>>7925891
I grew up in the South. Faulkner washes away the authentic, gothic disfigurement in the culture that O'Conner embraces.
>>
The Brazilian James Joyce is Claude Levi Strauss.

That doesn't mane she's the southern Joyce, though.

I feel like she's more the southern Beckett.

Is writing joycean a generation after Joyce's really anything like being someplace's James Joyce?
>>
>>7934259
Rosa made Portuguese into his bitch, taking it to its limits, expanding it, while writing a deep book.

He didn't just write Finnegans Wake you know. Dubliners is very intelligible.

>>
>>7925521
Joyce is the Irish Melville

And even that gives the irishman undue credit.
>>
>>7925680
In the Heart of the Heart of the Country is on the level of Dubliners--one of the best story collections of all time. Gass doesn't have anything to match in quality with Portrait or Ulysses, but in terms of style and scope he is comparable to Joyce. Definitely not as good but a worthy successor.
>>
>>7925870
Brazil isn't as localized as Ireland either, but Guimarães is still fucking G O A T
>>
>>7925687
>If you're reading this on a screen, fuck off. I'll only talk if I'm gripped with both hands.

lol no
>>
>>7934259
Tbqh, brazilian culture was (and on many ways, still is) very backwards back then, and it took a lifetime for things to really catch in here. As far as I know, Rosa was trying to create more modernist stuff but simply wasn't being published due to reactionary publishing houses.

Now, truth be told, the man conquered portuguese like no one did since Camões, and his work is really worth getting into
>>

>>

>he thinks namecalling is going to eliminate the validity of comparison
Defending Joyce on the bluster of you having bought into a meme instead of on his subversion of form tells me you're not going to understand Joyce either.
>>

Well put, anon.
