im not even pseudo intelectual. I've accepted my retardedness. I've learned to see the futility in all intelectual pursuits, the arrogance in thinking that a single human of decent but not great intelligence can really improve the immense pool of philosophical and scientifical knowledge that already exists. It's a very dreadful, impotent, humbly honest position to take.

'Intellectual' is vestigial spook borne from outdated forms of knowledge distribution. No such thing anymore
>>
The greatest joy in life is pretending to be smart. I figured this out at a young age and it has continually been reproven to me throughout my life.

So I have honed my sophistic skills. I know how to present myself differently to different people. I give the impression of modesty for the sake of feeding my ego. I keep track of my assumed positions so I can put on a guise of consistency. I created an entire system of metaphysics that is of no use beyond making me look intelligent. Even now I exaggerate the intellectual rigor of my activities out of vanity.

I didn't choose the smug life. The smug life chose me. I don't know how to live any other way.

It's not that I'm lazy, I'm just not good doing things I don't enjoy. I don't want to do something that'll suck because, even though I'm not making money, I value my time. I am doing what I enjoy like reading, browsing the internet, taking walks, etc, but if I were to sell my time doing something I don't enjoy I don't think it'd be worth it.

I used to work in landscaping with my friend and that was okay. It was menial work and gave me a lot of time to think, and a lot of time to read in the truck on the way to work. Not a Mexican, by the way. I only have so much time on this earth and would rather do something other people say is useless than do something I don't want to.

I also have the thing of if I don't like something, I don't really do it to the best of my ability so it's a waste of my time as well. Things I'm interested in I do well, but I don't want to waste mine or anyone's time doing something I don't enjoy and giving off a poopoo job, you know?

I have all of the necessary cognitive faculties to be well read, but I work an active 7-7 graveyard shift that leaves me mostly dead inside so instead I just listen to lectures on the fly and give my wife the remaining life I have in me.

All my friends and co-workers constantly tell me how I'm super smart and underachieving.

I'm petrified at the prospect of going to uni and finding out just how average I am.
>>
Classmates: "You are a genius!"
My friends: "You are so stupid.."

I believe it depends on the situation. My friends believe I'm stupid because they usually discuss relationships and ordinary life-stuff that I can't be bothered with so obviously I come off as dumb when I know nothing about them. My classmates believe I'm a sort of a genius, but that's because they lack general interest in our field and I'm diving head first to learn about it. Frankly I believe all people are clever but in their own ways. The saying "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” really applies.

I remember in high school, one of my classmates was not that clever and it didn't look like he would even pass the classes. He shaped up enough to get out of high school but he was just overall a hyper-energetic kid who shouldn't been forced to stay at the school bench for as long as he had to. What is he doing now? Owning his own farm and making millions more than any of my classmates currently (keep in mind we are all 22–23 years old). It's not that he was stupid, he just lacked interest because all he wanted to do was to tend the farm and drive tractors. To be fair he probably isn't as intelligent as most of my classmates but does intelligence matter as long as you can provide for yourself?
>>
>>7910274
>"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
It would have to be a pretty stupid fish to accept that judgement. Conversely, a really intelligent fish to understand judgement and the tree climbing competition.

Sometimes I wonder about the truest way to measure intelligence. I've realised that a person is only as smart to the extent which they express their intelligence. You might have the capacity to write great literature, or develop the next big scientific breakthrough, or whatever else, but if you do not use this ability, doesn't that just make you an idiot? If that is the case, then I'm an absolute dumbass. I read, sure, but I'm terrible at school, and I don't really do anything in my spare time besides browsing the web. I'm strangely ok with that.
>>
>>7910332

join the club senpai. are you sure that you being ok with not doing anything in spare time besides browsing the web is strange? are you sure its just not laziness and complacency?

just a heads up. this strange okayness/laziness/complacency will fuck you up later when you realize the life/potential you gave away by browsing the web. when the ill effects begin to become really evident, you will hate your current self. I say that because i hate my past self.
>>
>>7910174

Oh, I see. It's interesting to know that I am not alone in my ideas here because everyone else around me doesn't understand. My friend is currently working his ass off at a job he hates just so his wife and child can get manicures and pedicures and shit. I told him they didn't need that stuff to be happy, but if they don't have the latest garbage then they're not okay.

He's the only one working too, which is also infuriating. It's not like he works at a company or something. He does stuff like landscaping or property something or other, so he's not pulling in loads on a salary. He's working hourly and working himself to death. I don't get it.
>>
>>7909932
I hate it when I casually mention some passage in a poem or some bit of history and I get called an intellectual

People often fail to realize I'm an anti-intellectual intellectual
>>
>>7910332
I have had the same thought, so allow me to offer two questions which helped me think about it.

1 Does your public status (or the absence thereof) matter more than the local reputation you gain through idle conversation with friends and loved ones?

2 Martin Amis says somewhere that, minus the man of letters part, what Nabokov said of himself was true of most men: "I think like a genius, I write like a distinguished author, I speak like a child." If you take what you said and look at it another way, is it not equally true that idiots and great men alike have a vivid inner life and a genius which their writing does not quite capture? It this not occasion for some kind of hope?

Pseudo intellectual here. This will not actually make you smart, a lot of studies have shown that genetics are a larger contributor to intelligence than environment, and environmental factors begin to play a much less impressive role as you grow older and take shape. In truth, if you do not have a stunning Mensa IQ intellect already, you cannot gain one, even through hard work. At most you can become another inferior ape with a vocabulary a cut above the rest, but you will never know what it means to be half as inherently great as the men whose work you may now parrot.

Same here. Except for me, it's not so much how stupid I am, but also mentally unstable. I've hurt and been hurt by enough people to learn that it is better to just stay quiet, stay out of the way, and stay alone. You never know, he could be trying his best. That is one of the many woes of being a retard, everyone believes that anything can be achieved simply through enough effort and that if we're not all perfect it's simply because we're not trying hard enough. Is that idea perpetrated because of naturally excellent people who cannot empathize with the limitations of others and hold them to an unrealistic standard, or the /lazybutsmart/ kids lying to themselves who want to pretend they're secretly amazing and just haven't tried to reach their full potential yet? Probably both.

I at least appreciate the people in this thread who are honest and admit their limitations, even if they try to appear as more.

No it isn't. It's a pattern recognition skill that can be acquired. If you scored < 120 on an IQ test here's a remedy: Get a MSc in pure mathematics and take the test again. Watch the IQ go up.
Genes influence computation, retention, and recall speed. That's all. All else is a matter of having a huge database of knowledge.

>Grades strongly correlate to intelligence. If you had bad grades, you're probably below average, not just lazy.
That's just stupid. I can cheat and get high grades. Am I intelligent? No. Also, If I have no motivation to learn some subject--however trivial--I will declare it boring or trivial or uninteresting (which does NOT mean that you're lazy: rather, you choose to spend your time wisely on things that are not boring) and simply ignore it.
