Tried NoFap myself and by week three I think I could have been diagnosed and manic. Not the good kind you might get from adderall or coffee. The irritable, unwontedly confrontational, bordering on insanity kind of manic. Thankfully I caved in and came to realize the necessity of the orgasm to young men like myself. I guess it's more appropriate for true addicts who sit inside edging for hours daily.

I don't know about abstinence but only masturbating or having sex when your body is very clearly telling you you should is a good idea. Many people seem to treat sexual urges like the vague urges that the obese have to consume sugar or what have you. Or the cigarette addict. An almost imperceptible arousement that is really more the desire for a little spike in pleasure than actual sexual feelings.

I don't want to become asexual or anything like that. I very much like the fact that I am now very easily aroused. Not as a sensual pleasure (which it hardly is); but rather, I feel like I have regained a healthy appreciation for the human form. I want to clear the images of pornography from my head, eventually; I want to do battle with my romantic inclinations, which grow sweeter and more painful by continual rejection.
Self-denial is what I intend. Already I am beginning to feel new and sweet sensations whenever I look upon women, whom I regard with more affection than before. The greatest evil in satiety was that I looked on them coldly, and disinterestedly.
Above all else I must stress that normal affections are more lovely than the sick and overindulged fantasies of a masturbator. I lost my appetite for normal love; by a long process of abstinence I have regained it. I feel as though I have been let out of a dungeon to breathe fresh air. The ecstasies and the pains of human beauty are a feeling almost wholly new to me, or long forgotten. But, of course, I am taking up a struggle. The easiest course is to relapse into porn etc. Yet I know I ought to go on in the course I've chosen, which is already giving new joys I scarce could have imagined.
All I ask is for a few poems, treatises, and so on; that I might have something more to lean upon when I am tempted. I already have a good many, but more can't hurt.

I can't remember where exactly but Kant writes against masturbation. Basically it fits into his wider ethical philosophy as you are are using yourself as a 'means' rather than 'ends'. To me its a pretty funny bit of sophistry by a Georgian philosopher who is altogether embarrassed by the subject.

Sadly, I don't even have that luxury. I get the urges, but due to a prostate issue I have to abstain for several weeks or maybe months. And due to past failures to do so, now I have to avoid arousal as well since the chemicals involved in it are just as dangerous as those involved in masturbation and ejaculation.

Well masturbation is always easier with a visual object. I don't know if there is anyone dependent on pornography—I'm not—but the temptation to both is more or less the same. You get excited by the idea of the female form or the movement of male in female in a sexual act—you seek out images as an aide, or you make do with what your mind supplies.
