It seems like a lot of South American literature has that. What's the correlation between South America and their hard on for the bohemian lifestyle?

Actuallty Cortazar orginal intentions was to make fun of that kind of living, the so called "Paris cliche". However, a lot of people seems to concur that the novel does read more like an apotheosis of that cliche.

I liked it, certainly very innovative and influential at its time. Not so much today, but still worth a read.
His shorter stuff is miles better
very mixed feelings on this. if you read it definitely do it in the Hopscotch order instead of straight through - I read it straight through and wished I had read some of the endnotes first. especially useful is the one discussing what kind of novel the semi-fictionalized author is interested in writing - a comic novel, where the characters are not to be praised, but are figures of fun. makes the endless assholery of the main character a little more palatable when you realize you're not supposed to identify with him at all.
all that said...it's long and there's a lot of assholery. the main char is in his mid-late 30s and he has the emotional intelligence of a teenager. a few of the chapters are quite good but it's hard for me to recommend this

pls, don't let /lit/ become /g/
