I haven't. I thought getting some sort of secondary literature type overview might be a better way to get acquinted.

Would you recommend just diving into the sutras? If so, which ones?

Diamond Sutra
Heart Sutra
Lotus Sutra
Mahavairocana Tantra
Golden Light Sutra

You can't really skip any of theses, they're pretty much required to even begin understanding Mahayana Buddhism.
