That is not an easy question. It's not like music were a simple yes works. Some are some are not. Most will over price over hype and cut out an artist as much as they can. The bigger the publisher the less grey the area. I would pretty much pirate all but the indie stuff and if you find something you really enjoy by author go and support them by buying the pirated book or other of there stuff.

Also kindle takes a mighty mean cut. Like 20% then there's the publishers cut if they do both hard and e copies.

If you want to support books as a medium buy real or used ones (price data from used books can help publishers better understand demand for their book). Without publishers there's no one to hype or advertise books and in order to find stuff you'd basically have to go blog hunting.

A 20% cut, given how many people are involved in rendering something on kindle isn't that bad.

What it come down to is if you can afforded your book habbit.

There is online libraries for e books as well though but it's still a new thing and lacking selection.
